Alcohol Fact of the Day, Tuesday April 18
Jägermeister (German for master hunter in the sense of "expert" or "committed" hunter) is a strong (70-proof; 35%) liqueur flavored with herbs. The exact list of the 56 herbs used is kept secret. Obviously, licorice is a main component of flavor and contrary to the urban legends, Jäg contains neither deer blood nor opium. The side of the bottle is printed in German: Das ist des Jägers Ehrenschild, daß er beschützt und hegt sein Wild, weidmännisch jagt, wie sich's gehört, den Schöpfer im Geschöpfe ehrt. Which of course in English translates to: This is the hunter's badge of honor, that he protect and nourish his game, hunt sportingly, as is proper, and honor the Creator in creation. |
